China's GDP grew by 9.5% in 2004, its fastest pace in seven years.
• The consumer price index (CPI) increased by 3.9% in 2004 versus
1.2% in 2003.
• The demand for goods manufactured in China continued to increase
during 2004 with both the value of exports and the trade surplus with
the rest of the world growing to record levels.
• The level of overseas investment into China also increased
significantly (by 13% during 2004, to over US$60 billion, making
China the world’s second largest importer of capital after the United
States.
• The strong economic growth momentum is expected to continue but
at a slightly slower rate through 2005. The main reason for this is the
government’s increased efforts to slow down the rapid economic
