A group of people doing similar tasks in geographically dispersed locations.
Senior Leadership provides the sponsorship
Community Gatekeeper knowledgeable about processes at each location – usually at a central office
Focal Points are based at each location
Three things about Communities of Practice
These are Roles & not Positions
Dotted Lines imply virtual organization, do not show up in any org chart
Size of the COP can vary Smallest COP Casting 5 Locations; Largest COP Health & Safety 253 Average COP -50 Locations
COP allow one to share knowledge across the organization that shatters hierarchy and implied bureaucracy
